THE BASIC BELIEFS OF ISLAM

RUKUN IMAN

What do Muslims believe?

The basic belief of Islam is that there is only one God, whose name in the Arabic language is Allah, and who is the sole and sovereign ruler of the universe.

Muslims have 6 main beliefs

  1. Belief in Allah as the one and only God.
  2. Belief in angels.
  3. Belief in the holy books.
  4. Belief in the Prophets (special messengers).
e.g. Adam, Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Dawud (David), Isa (Jesus).
Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final prophet.
  5. Belief in the Day of Judgement…
The day when the life of every human being will be assessed to decide whether they go to heaven or hell.
  6. Belief in Predestination…
That Allah has already decided what will happen.
Muslims believe that this doesn’t stop human beings making free choices

FIVE PILLARS OF ISLAM

RUKUN ISLAM

What are the five Pillars of Islam?

These are five duties that every Muslim is obliged to perform. The five pillars of Islam help Muslims put their faith into action.

  • Shahadah: declaration of faith
“I bear witness that there is no god, but God; I bear witness that Muhammad is the prophet of God.” By reciting this, one enters Islamic faith.
  • Shalah: prayer
Muslims are required to pray five times a day, washing themselves before prayer and facing in the direction of Mecca while praying.
  • Zakat: giving a fixed proportion to charity
Muslims are required to give away a percentage of their earnings to those less fortunate, regardless of their religion.
  • Shaum: fasting during the month of Ramadan
Muslims fast for one lunar month each year, a period called Ramadan. During this time, Muslims reflect on their behaviour and strive to purify their thoughts.
  • Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca
If it is financially possible, Muslims are required to travel to Mecca once in their lifetime.

Where is Allah?

Allaah tells us in Qur’aan
That to us He is near
What this means is so important
I’ll explain it here.

Allaah, we should know is He
Who’s high above the sky
High above the heavens too
Allaah is up high!

So when we say ‘Allaah is near’
What it means is clear
Allaah knows and sees all things
And all things He can hear.

That is what His nearness means
Not physically with you!
He is near because He knows
Everything you do.

So Allaah is not everywhere!
Like I’ve told you so
High above the sky is Allaah
This we all now know.

Eat with me

We all love to eat good food and Mmmm it tastes real good! We

know that food is from Allaah so thank Him we should. Now if our

Muslim friends come by and with us take a seat, we should try to

share our food and give them some to eat. Do not keep them

sitting there, looking on in hope. Do not say if they want some, ‘You

can’t have some food, nope!’ That would really not be kind, that

would be quite wrong. You’d really hurt their feelings and they

would not stay for long.

Imagine now how you would feel if you were hungry too. But then

your friends refused to give some yummy food to you! Won’t you

start to feel upset and won’t you feel quite sad? Then you’ll know

how others feel when you do something bad.

Dearest Muslims, always share and better try to be. Allaah will be

pleased with this and give you more, you’ll see! Think of me, my

dear young Muslim, I will think of you. Allaah loves it when we

share and think of others too.

Allah is One God

Allaah is the One true God
Truly He’s just One
He has no partner and no wife
And Allaah has no son!

Allaah is the One true God
He always hears us call
So we must only pray to Allaah
No one else at all!

Allaah is the One true God
He’s our Lord and King
So everyone believe in Allaah!
Worship none but Him!
